I began painting in 1996. My background is in fashion and costume design, theatre, dance, and interior design. I have taken extension classes in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and City College of San Francisco, but I am primarily self-taught.
After many years of painting landscapes, I have spent the last few years exploring abstraction. My process has always been to make marks on my support, then see what shapes are suggested, and develop those into a composition. I have continued that practice with these paintings while experimenting with different surface textures -- from smooth wood panel to very coarse-grained linen. Freeing myself from the horizon-line has forced me to paint with greater emotion, and use color more freely.
